Unfortunately I was unable to attend Kelly Dobson's full lecture due to a class conflict but was still fascinated by the little that I heard. Her work is incredibly relevant to our class and I was very intrigued by her physicalization of our thoughts/questions about technology into machines. Her ability to create machines and technological structures that illustrate the way in which machines affect our society was brilliant. Technology appears to be both a subject human beings have control of and no control at all. I couldn't help but think that because technology is a product of our society but yet again greatly molds and manipulates it to fit to its advancements and needs, who/what is actually behind it? After hearing Dobson speak I began to think that If we have control and the ability to create machines and the power to develop new technological products, how/when does it become uncontrollable? When does technology reach a point where its advancements and reactions are not what was expected or continue to affect society in a way that is detrimental or/and stultifying? I am interested in continuing to explore the work of Dobson and how her machines can be examples of these questions.
